A lawyer, diplomat and anthropologist whose De l’égalité des races humaines (1885) refuted the racial theories of Arthur de Gobineau.
Firmin is regarded as a pioneer of anthropology and of Pan-Africanism, and served as Haiti’s foreign minister.
